Why the last mile costs so much

Every other leg of a supply chain benefits from consolidation. The last mile deliberately breaks consolidation apart: one vehicle, many stops, each stop with its own access constraints, signature requirements, and failure modes. Cost per stop falls sharply as stop density rises, which is why urban routes are profitable and rural routes rarely are at flat national pricing.

Measure the program on first-attempt success, on-time within promised window, cost per delivered order, and post-delivery contact rate. Those four together tell you far more than an on-time percentage from a carrier scorecard.
