The short answer
Dimensional weight prices a shipment by the space it occupies rather than its actual weight. Multiply length x width x height in inches and divide by the carrier’s DIM divisor (commonly 139 for domestic parcel). Carriers bill the greater of actual and dimensional weight.
How the calculation works
Take the outer carton dimensions in inches, rounding each up to the next whole inch. Multiply them together and divide by the divisor in your carrier agreement. A 16 x 12 x 10 inch box is 1,920 cubic inches; at a divisor of 139 that is a 13.8 lb dimensional weight, rounded to 14 lbs. If the box actually weighs 4 lbs, you are billed on 14.
Air freight uses a volumetric divisor as well, commonly 166 cubic inches per pound or 6,000 cubic centimeters per kilogram, depending on whether the rate is quoted in imperial or metric.

- For air freight, plan pallet build height and density deliberately; loose stacking pays the same as freight.
Where DIM weight quietly changes strategy
Dimensional pricing pushes bulky, light products toward regional carriers, zone-skipping, and forward-positioned inventory. If your average shipment bills at two to four times its actual weight, distributed fulfillment usually pays for itself faster than a rate negotiation, because it cuts zone and DIM exposure at the same time.
